Sydney will never forget the people who bravely put their lives in danger to stop a man rampaging through the CBD with a large knife.

Nearly half a dozen people used chairs and milk crates in order subdue Mert Ney on Tuesday and stop him from hurting anyone.

That bravery has been immortalised in a mural on Chippen Lane in Sydney by artist Scottie Marsh.

He's used the now iconic milk crate as the centrepiece in his artwork, along with the caption: "Not all heroes wear capes."

Speaking to news.com.au, Scottie said: "Australians will kind of act first and think afterwards.Americans are kind of about me first. Australians pull together a bit more."

It's pretty impressive to see Scottie get the artwork up so quickly and, interestingly, he painted over his previous mural, which was about Will 'Egg Boi' Connolly after he egged Senator Fraser Anning.

Scottie also went viral two weeks ago when he created an incredible mural of George Pell near the Vatican.

While everyone has been quick to heap praise on the people who helped stop the 21-year-old from continuing his alleged rampage, three of the heroes insist they were just trying to help.

Three Manchester blokes, Paul O'Shaughnessy, 37, his brother Luke, 30 and work colleague Leith Cuthbert, rushed to help and were instrumental in stopping Ney but they don't reckon they're heroes.

Paul has told Channel 9's Today programme: "We're just there...if we can help we can help...we're just thankful we could play our part, but there were certainly other people who got there first.

"I was looking in his eyes...you could see that he wasn't well, he was very troubled...and it was just a shame to see this weak person that had caused so much damage."

The people who selflessly jumped into action have been praised by police and the New South Wales government

Police minister David Elliot said: "The city tonight, celebrates three brand-new heroes. And I think it would only be appropriate for the commissioner and I to thank those three individual citizens who have acted well and truly beyond the call of any citizen in bringing this offender to bear.

"Can I also congratulate those firefighters...who have also gone beyond the call of duty.

"I'll be making sure they get the appropriate accolades, and that everyone knows this is how Sydneysiders respond."

NSW Police have released a statement following the incident, saying: "The 20-year-old man was taken to Day Street Police Station, before being taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where he has undergone surgery for a laceration to his knee.

Police have seized electronic devices, which will undergo forensic analysis and they're asking for anyone with information about Mert Ney to come forward.
