A group of people dining at a Sydney cafe rushed to protect a heavily pregnant woman after she was the victim of an unprovoked assault.

CCTV footage from the the Church Street venue in Parramatta, Sydney shows a man approaching a table of women and initiating a conversation with them.

Out of nowhere, the man can be seen leaping across the table and assaulting one of the women, who was 38 weeks pregnant. The footage also appears to show him kicking and stomping on the woman after she falls onto the ground.

New South Wales Police said in a statement: "The man allegedly leaned over the table and punched the woman in the head multiple times before she fell to the ground where it's alleged the man stomped on her head."

Thankfully, loads of people who were in the cafe around 10.30pm were able to step in and break up the unprovoked assault before anymore damage could be done.

The security camera footage shows the man calming down almost immediately as onlookers encircle him to ensure he doesn't run off.

Inspector Luke Sywenkyj of Parramatta Police Area Command said of the victim: "She suffered a number of bruises and has some swelling. As a result of the assault she does seem somewhat emotionally and physically traumatised."

Authorities have praised the quick actions of the people inside the cafe.

Inspector Sywenkyj said: "A number of bystanders have intervened, and I'd like to personally commend a number of members of the community for their brave actions.

"If it were not for the brave actions of these members of the community in stopping the assault, the victim very may well have sustained much more serious injuries."
