Sydney may have experienced its hottest ever April day on Monday, but that could all be set to change - and fast.

According to Queensland-based weather expert Dave Taylor, Australia may find itself tackling not only a chilly weekend, but also its coldest winter in decades. Strewth.

"People need to make the most of the warm weather this week because the temperature will drop over the weekend," Taylor told Daily Mail Australia.

"It won't get super cold but will go back to average autumn temperatures. We will start seeing those freezing temperatures in six weeks."

Both Weatherzone and the Bureau of Meteorology are still predicting warm temperatures throughout the weekend.

But Taylor - who has studied the weather since he was a kid, and runs the Brisbane Weather and East Coast Weather Facebook pages - thinks he could be right about the cold snap, having accurately predicted extreme weather conditions in the past.

"I predicted summer would go for an extra six weeks and I was on-point," he said.

BRITISH HEADTEACHER ANNOUNCES SNOW DAY IN BEST WAY:

He believes that every winter from now until 2025 'will be colder than the last'.

He continued: "A reduction in sun spots is the cause of the cold snap, and predicts the freezing winters will end with a severe weather event - likely widespread flooding - that will be worse than Australia has ever experienced."

Taylor also reckons that there will be snow in places across Australia where it has never been recorded - including Eungella, which is west of Mackay, Queensland.

He also predicts 5cm of snow for Tasmania by this Tuesday.

The weather fan says that the hot and humid summer, which was experienced up and down the country, is another indicator of the cold winter we can expect.

"I think Brisbane will experience a winter like Sydney, Sydney will feel like Melbourne, and Melbourne will feel like Tasmania," he said.

He continued to say that the minimum temperatures in each major city could be 3C colder than they've been in recent years, adding: "We will have a lot more big Antarctic blows reaching toward Australia - they will be a lot more powerful than in recent years."

Taylor believes that NSW and Victoria will have a good snow season, with the coldest weather expected for June and July.

He added: "Sun spots activity is linked to our El Nino and La Nina Seasons.

"For example, the lower number of sun spots then more than likely we fall into a La Nino, the more active than when we look at El Nino."

The Bureau of Meteorology will release its 'outlook for winter in late May'.

"Science shows further ahead we forecast the less accurate those forecasts are," a BOM spokesperson said.
