The former US President, Barack Obama, appeared to make a dig at current leader Donald Trump during a speech in Germany yesterday.

Obama, celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, said that the proposed wall between the United States and Mexico will not solve anything, reports ABC.

Although Obama did not mention Trump by name, in his speech, the conversation steered towards politics and their differing world views.

The former leader said: "In this new world that we live in, we can't isolate ourselves, we can't hide behind a wall.

Obama, returning after a short break from the world of politics, was holding a discussion entitled: "Being Involved In Democracy: Taking on Responsibility Locally and Globally."

The civic engagement theme is seemingly a key part of early post-presidential speeches, and the Obama Foundation chose to sponsor the event as a way to highlight the role of faith-based organizations in local communities.

President Trump is being closely followed with his first trips abroad. He started in Saudi Arabia before moving to Israel and then the Vatican to meet the pope.

At the Vatican, Trump was presented with a 192-page document on climate change - a hot topic for the president, who has attempted to alter some environmental laws back home in America.

Both Obama and Merkel reflected on their policies on healthcare, foreign aid and refugees.

The ex-President told the audience that America was 'in peril' as Republicans, led by Donald Trump, try to repeal and replace Obamacare.

"We are unique among advance countries in that we don't have universal health care. My hope was that I was able to get 100 percent of people health care while I was president," said Obama.

"We didn't quite achieve that but we were able to get 20 million people healthcare who didn't have it before.

"Certainly, I have some regrets that we weren't able to get everybody health care and obviously some of the progress that we made is now in peril, but the point is that for those 20 million people their lives have been better."
