Beachgoers in Florida were shocked to find what they thought was a 'decapitated body'... only to later realise it was just an old mannequin covered in barnacles and seaweed.

Non-profit organisation Ocean's Hour shared photos of the mysterious figure lying on the beach in Perdido Key, Escambia County, saying one person had been so alarmed by the sight that they'd called 911.

"Volunteer Kathleen was walking the intercoastal side in Perdido Key... when she came across what she thought was a dead, decapitated body," the Facebook post explained.

"Another visitor had even called 911. Upon further investigating, she realized it was a mannequin!

"How long has she been out in the water collecting barnacles and sealife? Way too long!"

The post added: "We are glad it wasn't a real body!"

The headless mannequin was found lying face-down in the sand, with barnacles and sealife covering the body.

A visible hole in the sole of one foot is a bit of a giveaway - as is the neat cavity at the neck - but on first glance it's certainly a bit of a creepy sight to stumble upon while strolling along the beach.

Once Facebookers found out it was nothing but a crusty old mannequin, the relief made way for conversation about one particularly pert feature.

"That mannequin sure does have a nice butt," one person commented.

Someone else wrote: "Still has a better butt than me."

A third added: "That booty close up is excellent."

However, others understood the initial alarm, with one writing: "I woulda called the police too wouldn't have come a step closer f*** that."

The post has since gone viral, racking up more than 2,000 Facebook reactions and more than 3,000 comments - also making headlines worldwide.

No doubt Ocean Hour volunteers are used to finding all sorts of strange objects, as they spend at least an hour each Saturday 'cleaning a local beach or waterway' in Florida, according to the Facebook page.

"Defend our beautiful natural environment and wildlife by promoting a clean, peaceful and fulfilling existence through community involvement and education," the profile says.

Still, I'd imagine thinking they'd discovered a decapitated corpse probably wasn't quite what they'd signed up for when they gave up their Saturdays to cleaning beaches...
