Bill Cosby has been sentenced to three to 10 years in state prison for a sexual assault in 2004, according to AP.

The 81-year-old entertainer, who was once dubbed 'America's Dad', must undergo counselling for life and appear on the sex offenders' register.

According to CNN, prosecutors asked for a sentence between five and 10 years behind bars but his defence attorney asked for a term of house arrest citing Cosby's age and blindness.

The actor and stand-up comedian was convicted back in April of three counts of aggravated indecent assault after he drugged and assaulted a woman at his home in 2004.

Earlier in the court hearing, Judge Steven O'Neill, ruled that Cosby will be classified as a 'sexually violent predator'.

According to Variety, the Judge will not grant bail pending appeal even though Cosby's lawyer, Joseph P. Green Jr., is now seeking release on bail pending appeal.

CNN reported that the victim provided a personal statement which was not read aloud in court, however, speaking on Monday, she told the hearing: "Self-doubt and confusion kept me from turning to my family or friends as I normally did. I felt completely alone, unable to trust anyone, including myself."

Variety reported how the woman testified to taking three blue pulls that were offered to her by the defendant during a visit to his home in early 2004 because she trusted him and believed they were some herbal relaxant. But she soon became incapacitated and 'couldn't fight him off'.

She added: "I had to relive every moment of the sexual assault in horrifying detail in front of Mr. Cosby and his lawyers. I felt traumatised all over again and was often in tears.

"I had to watch Cosby make jokes and attempt to degrade and diminish me, while his lawyers belittled and sneered at me."

She also claimed: "We may never know the full extent of his double life as a sexual predator but his decades-long reign of terror as a serial rapist is over."

Apparently, Cosby showed no visible reaction to the sentence and remained in his seat quietly.

This was the first sentencing of a celebrity to come from the #MeToo movement.
