Last year Yusaku Maezawa became the 'Tweeter Of The Most Retweeted Tweet' after he pledged to giveaway 100 million yen ($913,400 / £699,000) - so naturally, people flocked before him.

Now, the billionaire businessman has upped that amount to a ridiculous one billion yen ($9.13m / £6.99m) which he says is a 'social experiment' to see whether the monetary payments boost the winners' happiness.

He's going to split the money between 1000 followers which means each person will be given one million yen each ($9,130 / £6,991) and the impact of the money will be tracked through regular surveys to see whether people are happier after being given a million yen.

In an announcement on YouTube, the online shopping mogul - who founded retailer ZOZO - called the contest a 'serious social trial' to see what impact a million yen could have on a person's life.

Explaining the purpose of the giveaway, he said: "So, to put it simply, the purpose of this giveaway is to conduct a social experiment. To explain in details, this social experiment is to see whether the 1 million yen that they receive will give them a change to be happier.

"This is what I want to know. How will 1 million yen affect your life? Last year when I did this giveaway I gave away the money and that was it. I didn't really get a chance to communicate with the winners."

He went on: "We won't be communicating directly but I will be sending out a survey every now and then. I'd like to know how you are doing, what you are using your money on, after receiving and spending the money, has your work, life, families... had anything changed?"

Yusaku Maezawa will be Elon Musk's first customer to travel to the moon.

The 44-year-old carried on: "To me, this is a serious social experiment so if there are any sociologists or economists watching this, it would be great if you could share your knowledge with me."

You might be wondering how you apply for a chance to be quids in. Well it's simple - you just need to follow Maezawa on twitter and retweet his giveaway tweet - it's as simple as that.

He explained to his 420,000 subscribers on YouTube that winners will be drawn randomly meaning that everyone has an equal chance.

Well, 2020 really could be a good year.
