BMW Driver Miraculously Survives Full Speed Collision With LA Metro Train

Amazingly, he escaped with 'scrapes and bruises'

A BMW driver had a lucky escape after he tried to make a left turn across railway tracks when a train was approaching.

As you can see from the security video, the train smashed into his car whilst it was on the crossing, but the driver was fortunate enough to only end up with 'scrapes and bruises', according to the police.

The incident happened at the level crossing at the intersection of Long Beach Avenue and 55th Street in Los Angeles.

As the driver tries to turn left across the tracks, his car is then shunted and pushed down the tracks as the oncoming train crashes into it at some speed.

Local media has reported that only one of the barriers at the train crossing was down at the time.

The video certainly suggests that the barrier stopping traffic approaching and turning left - coming from the same direction as the train - was not down.

It's obvious that the driver of the black car had not seen the train approaching and assumed that it was OK to cross over the tracks.

It is not clear whether the bells and flashing lights that denote the passing of a train at the crossing were active at the time of the crash.

The driver was taken from hospital after the incident, but was subsequently discharged after less than 24 hours.

The train that collided with the car was a Metro Blue Line train. The Metro Blue Line -also known as the A Line - runs north to south from the city of Los Angeles to Long Beach, California.

It is one of six lines that make up the whole of the Los Angeles Metro Rail system.

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department tweeted: "This could've had a tragic outcome.

"Fortunately the driver survived with minor injuries, but this should serve as a good reminder to all of us - pay attention near train tracks, and always obey all traffic signals and devices."

Yep, that is sound advice.

After seeing the video, it's immediately clear that the driver of the car was incredibly lucky to survive at all, not least without serious injury.

Underneath the LAPD tweet, one person commented: "Wow a higher power was looking out for them."

Another said: "Minor injuries? Wow I'm glad to hear that but I don't see how. I agree God was definitely present. People need to pay better attention to their surroundings..."

A third argued: "Maybe the safety of that left turn should be reviewed."

Maybe, just maybe.
