Rightly or wrongly, at some point, most people have had a little piddle in the sea. Where we generally draw the line, however, is burying our poo in the sand.

That's what one mother did when she reportedly tried to get rid of her baby's soiled nappy while enjoying a day at Boracay Beach in the Philippines.

In the video, you can see one woman washing the young child in the sea while another appears to be attempting to hide the nappy in the sand.

According to local news, authorities have closed a section of the tourist hotspot for up to three days while an extensive clean-up operation is carried out.

Boracay Interagency Rehabilitation Group general manager Natividad Bernardino told local news outlet ABS CBN: "We have restricted swimming temporarily while we do the cleanup and as we try to locate where the diaper was buried.

The woman allegedly buried her daughter's nappy in the sand.

"We are planning to give pamphlets through the airline on the do's and don'ts on the island, especially on the proper way to throw garbage and policy against defecation at Boracay beach."

An investigation is now underway to identify the poo-pertrator.

Tourism secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said: "Whoever is the violator, whether a foreigner or Filipino, should be reprimanded, there are penalties involved."

She added: "The good thing there is that Filipinos are conscious and they want to keep Boracay clean. If they see any wrongdoing, report it to us so we can reprimand those responsible swiftly because we cannot tolerate this."

Videos and photos of the alleged incident went viral earlier this week, with onlookers claiming the unnamed woman ignored their pleas for her to clean up her daughter's mess.

Part of the beach is now closed while authorities carry out an extensive clean-up.

One Twitter user who shared the video said: "The island has rubbish bins placed along the beachfront and they really chose to bury it in the sand?

"They just acted like they were deaf and headed back to the water to continue washing the child."

The town's 'anti-littering' laws make it illegal to defecate, urinate or spit in public, and the alleged incident comes almost a year after a six-month closure to fix the beach's sewage system.

Following the maintenance works, President Rodrigo Duterte reportedly released a statement branding Boracay's waters a cesspool.
