Two brothers who were making a fort to pass the time during lockdown stumbled upon a couple of gold bars worth around £71,700 (€80,000). And here I was made up because I found a packet of Oreos at the back of the cupboard.

The piece of good luck come about after the boys' parents decided to leave Paris to head to a family home in Vendôme just before France announced its lockdown, the BBC reports.

The boys, who have not been named, asked their dad if they could build a makeshift den in the garden out of sheets, leaves and other bits and pieces.

Their dad, a man in his 60s, said they were fine to do so and told the kids they could use some old sheets that had belonged to their late grandmother and were tucked away in one of the house's spare rooms.

The boys say that when they grabbed the old sheets 'two fairly heavy objects' fell out but that they initially didn't pay any attention to them and simply put them back.

Auctioneer Philippe Rouillac told local media the boys later informed their dad about the mystery objects and he asked them to go and get them.

He added: "But he initially believed they were knife holders that belonged to the grandmother."

However, after seeing the objects the dad reached out to the auctioneer with some snaps of the bars and was given the good news that they were not a pair of sword holders but instead solid gold bars weighing 1kg apiece.

The bars even come with a proof of purchase, made to the boys' late grandmother who bought them back in 1967.

The gold bars are now listed on Rouillac Auctioneers website and have been valued at around €40,000 (£35,800) each - and the auctioneer is hopeful they may even fetch a fair bit more due to the coronavirus pandemic increasing the price of gold.

He added: "We are going to wait for the price of gold to rise a little more. They could get at least 100,000 euros."

According to the BBC the two boys, who are aged around 10, have asked their dad to get them a pool if the items sell well.
