A British-flagged vessel has sunk off the island of Milos in Greece - with the Greek coast guard saying a rescue mission for its 17 passengers is now underway.

The coast guard has said a navy helicopter and several vessels have been dispatched to help carry out the rescue operation.

The circumstances surrounding the incident, or details of the vessel involved, have not been released yet.

Mayor of Milos, Manolis Mikelis, said: "We have information for 17 people, we are in the process of collecting people from the sea.

"At the moment there is wind in the area and it is making a lot of waves, we were told about a yacht.

"With every reservation, the boat has been overturned."
