Her body was then discovered the following day and paramedics unsuccessfully attempted to revive her. She was declared dead at the scene.

A post-mortem has been carried out and, according to the Mirror, it has been determined that the 22-year-old passed away from suffocation or asphyxiation.

Swiss police said in a statement: "A 29-year-old German man has been arrested and a file has been sent to the local prosecutor with an allegation of pre-intentional homicide.

"He is being held at the Farera judicial prison in Lugano Cadro district."

A spokesperson for the Foreign Office told the Mirror Online: "Our consular staff are assisting the family of a British woman following her death in Switzerland and are in contact with the Swiss and UK police."
