The world was shocked this morning when news of Chris Cornell's death broke.

The Audioslave and Soundgarden lead singer was found in the MGM Grand hotel by a friend. His death is now being investigated as a possible suicide.

Police spokesman Michael Woody told The Associated Press that he 'can't provide details' on what led investigators to make that determination, but noted there were 'basic things observed at the scene'.

Chris had been performing with Soundgarden at Detroit's Fox Theatre that evening, and he shared a Tweet regarding the fact he was in the city.

The last song he performed, In My Time Of Dying, tragically referenced his own death.

Local channel 4 WDIV Detroit reported that Chris' wife, Vicky Cornell, contacted a friend and asked them to check on him in his hotel room.

They reportedly went to the hotel and forced open Chris' door. It was there where they found his body in the en suite bathroom.

A statement from his representatives was issued to The Associated Press in which his death was described as 'sudden and unexpected'.

They added that Cornell's wife and family were in shock and would be working with a medical examiner to determine the cause of death. They also asked for privacy.

Celebrities have been sharing their own tributes to Cornell since the news of his death broke.
