A police officer in the US was filmed slapping his teenage daughter and pulling her hair because she had been 'disrespectful to a teacher'.

The officer was called into his daughter's school Pinecrest Cove Preparatory Academy in Miami, Florida, on 19 March, after she had allegedly been acting up, the Miami Herald reports.

Shocking CCTV footage from the principal's office shows him pull the teen by her hair, hit her in the face and with a belt. At one point the girl drops to the floor in the corner, while her dad continues to shout at her.

Two people are in the room at the time, but neither intervene and instead appear to carry on with their work, in a statement the school said one of the women is pregnant and was worried for the safety of her unborn baby.

Following the release of the CCTV footage, the officer, who is reported to have been a police officer for 24 years, has been suspended with pay.

He handed himself in to cops on the 2 April, and was later charged with child abuse. Police have said the teen 'did not sustain any visible injuries and/or bruises'.

In a statement, the school said: "The school followed procedure in response to the unfortunate incident which occurred in the office.

"The witness reported the incident to administration as soon as the parent left the premises and the school immediately reported it to the Department of Children and Families who contacted law enforcement.

"The school is continuing to investigate the incident and protocol.

"The parent, who is a police officer and who often visited the school in uniform, surrendered himself to authorities.

"The person [seen] witnessing the act is an expectant mother who was unsure if the parent had a weapon. She says that at the time she feared for the safety of the victim as well as that of her unborn child."

According to CBS Local, the officer is expected to take a plea deal. If the deal avoids a criminal conviction then he could possibly return to work.
