The man who inspired Denzel Washington's character in the legendary sports film Remember The Titans has died, at the age of 84.

Herman Boone was an iconic coach not only for helping his team, T.C. Williams High School, achieve a perfect 13-0 at the 1971 state championship, but also for being a figurehead when race relations in the US state of Virginia were tense.

The news was announced by former T.C. Williams principal John Porter.

The team's official Twitter account posted a message, saying: "It is with great sadness that we share the sad news of the passing of former Head Football Coach Herman Boone who led the Titans to the State Championship in 1971."

But it wasn't just at T.C. Williams High School where he led teams to victory.

At the E.J. Hayes High School in Williamston, North Carolina, his football teams managed to win a record of 99 wins and eight losses during a nine-year period.
