Aussie Couple Convert Backyard Fence To Let Them Have Drinks With The Neighbours

After a quick trip to Bunnings and a day's work, the Solomons get to hang out with their mates of 35 years.

Self-isolation has caused many of us to miss our mates.

Whether it's over a coffee at your favourite brunch place, a schooner or two at your local or even just sitting on the beach and enjoying the surf, the last few weeks have been tough.

But one Aussie couple has devised a way to see their mates of more than three decades while still maintaining within social distancing rules.

Linda and Les Solomons transformed part of their backyard fence so that it can fold down and turn into a table. The result: a nice drinking spot to hang out with their neighbours Jackie and Tony Cliffe.

Their son-in-law Matt runs Superior Rural Fencing and helped buy and install the fold-down table.

He's told LADbible: "[Linda] has been friends with their neighbours for 35 years. Just over two weeks ago [she] asked me if I could possibly do what a guy in Cairns did to their timber fence. I said it was definitely doable."

All the materials, including chains, latches, concrete, welding rods, self-tapping screws, were bought at Bunnings and came to less than $200.

After working on the project for just one day, the Solomons had the perfect way to maintain social distancing while having a catch-up.

As long as they stayed more than 1.5 metres away from each other and didn't touch anything from the other side, they should be all good.

Matt told us: "They thought the idea of transforming their fence would be a great way to be able to continue to socialise with their neighbours whilst remaining distant.

"Like most they were finding self isolation challenging at times.

"They have met up each day since having their fence converted and love how easy it is. They have recently added an outdoor heater and some lighting so they can continue to socialise after dark."

Matt's wife and Les and Linda's daughter Emma says it's really helped them deal with self-isolation.

She's told Yahoo Lifestyle: "Even once everything settles down they plan to continue to use it. Their grandkids will love being able to be passed over the fence to go and have a play."
