Crocs Have Officially Had A Gothic Upgrade

Prices range from $70 to $90, but you can’t really put a price on this fierceness, right?

Just when you thought Crocs couldn't get more, er, badass, the iconic shoes have gone and had an unexpected gothic makeover, courtesy of a brand new collaboration with Barney's New York.

The special edition Barneys New York XO Crocs series are being sold at the Barneys New York flagship store, and you can also find them online if you're not into all that IRL shopping lark.

Prices range from $70 (£55) to $90 (£71), but you can't really put a price on this fierceness, right?

Michelle Poole, Crocs' Senior Vice President and Chief Product and Merchandising Officer, told Footwear News: "Barneys and Crocs are both icons, but in very different ways, and that's what makes this collaboration so exciting and unexpected.

"It's the perfect combination of style and comfort that offers consumers a truly unique form of self-expression."

Barney's shared the new creation on Instagram, writing: "The @barneysny x @crocs collaboration is officially available online and in-store."

Some of the hashtags used included 'edgy' and 'punk'.

Several Instagrammers were immediately sold, with one commenting: "Okay this may have to be the first pair of Crocs I own."

It looks like others, however, might need a little more persuading.

"Eew. Make it stop," one said.

"Why would you do this?" another asked.

A third said: "No, just no. IDK who makes them."

Some people also pointed out at they'd seen a similar design long before the official product launched - saying that Barney's and Crocs had 'stolen' the concept from Instagrammer Garbage Boy, whose modified shoes went viral a few months ago.

The gothic-style shoes, which are made by Instagrammers @garbage_b0y and @lhommeboy, feature nickel-plated spikes and stainless steel chains.

You can even purchase an optional add-on in the form of a long chain that can attach to your trousers.

The product description on the Etsy listing reads: "Punk spike crocs to make your feet into the final form rare Pokémon they were meant to be. (PATENT PENDING)

"Made by @garbage_b0y (instagram) and sold by HEAVY CREAM.

"The spikes are nickel plated and the chain is high sheen stainless steel.

"Unisex, if you're unsure about size add it as a note to seller.

"Add-on: chain that runs from hinge to belt loop on pant leg as shown in pictures. (This is not the chain on the side of the shoe.)"

Commenting on Barney's Instagram post, one said: "@garbage_b0y does these better and you know it."

Another said: "@garbage_b0y did it first."

If you prefer Garbage Boy's handiwork, you can buy the Crocs on Etsy, where they're being sold for £190.60 ($248.62), plus delivery, by US store Heavy Cream.
