A dentist has revealed the thing we probably all do that makes our teeth yellow. Watch him talk us through it in the clip below:

Dr Tristan Peh says that while you may think it's best to scrub and scrub in order to get the best sheen on your gnashers, the opposite is true.

In a recent video to his TikTok account, he explains that brushing too hard can cause the enamel to wear away, which in turn causes the natural yellow beneath to show through.

He says: "Teeth are naturally yellow due to the second layer, Dentine.

"Many people think brushing their teeth harder will make them whiter.

"Brushing too hard wears away the white teeth enamel. When the enamel wears away, the teeth become more yellow and can also become more sensitive.

"So brush gently and use a soft brush."

Responding to a couple of followers, who asked how they should go about making their teeth whiter, Dr Peh said: "Yellow is normal. If you want whiter, you can do whitening.

"Over the counter products with dentist, chair side teeth whitening, or whitening trays."

In recent years, people have been taking much more care with their appearance, including trying to achieve the perfect set of teeth.

One of the most popular bandwagons many have been jumping on is having their teeth shaved down in order to have 'veneers' fitted.

However, Dr Shaadi Manouchehri, a London-based dentist, recently warned that such procedures could leave people suffering from nerve damage.

In a video shared on TikTok, in which she discussed a specific example, she said: "Shaving teeth down to pegs like that is going to damage the nerve and you're going to need a root canal treatment and an extraction at some point in your life.

"Second point, veneers or crowns will need to be replaced every 10 to 15 years typically."

Dr Manouchehri continued: "She [the woman used as an example] is going to need to replace them probably four or five times throughout her lifetime if not more.

"Not only the financial burden is gonna be an issue, secondly it's gonna be a biological burden because the tooth physically can't be prepared and re-prepared every single time.

"So, she's a gorgeous young lady and she's ruined her teeth, possibly for the rest of her life, and she's gonna have dentures by the age of 40. I personally wouldn't choose that, would you?"
