Disney Gets Rid Of 'Do Not Disturb' Signs At Some Of Its Hotels

A number of Walt Disney World hotels will no longer be using 'Do Not Disturb' signs on doors.

In total, four hotels - Polynesian Village Resort, Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, Contemporary Resort and Bay Lake Tower - will replace the traditional 'Do Not Disturb' signs with 'Room Occupied' ones, allowing housekeepers or maintenance staff to enter the rooms daily.

A member of staff will still need to knock and identify themselves if there is a 'Room Occupied' sign on the door, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

The new signs come just months after the October shooting in Las Vegas, where gunman, Stephen Paddock, shot and killed 58 people from the 32^nd floor of the Mandalay Bay casino and hotel; hundreds more were injured.

Paddock had stored thousands of rounds of ammunition and a number of firearms in his room before the shooting. His cache of weapons went undetected as he had a 'Do Not Disturb' sign on his door, so staff didn't enter.

Some hotels in Las Vegas have since changed their policies following the incident, according to KVVU. The Orleans Casino, for example, now conducts 'safety and welfare checks' on rooms which have had 'Do Not Disturb' signs outside for more than two days, rather than three, as it previously did.

The owners of the hotel told KVVU all guests checking in would be made aware of the new policy.

When asked by the Orlando Sentinel, Disney declined to say whether the change in policy was due to the shooting - but did tell the paper the decision was made for a variety of reasons, including safety and security as well as 'guest experience'.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, hotel rooms are typically only checked after three days if they have a 'Do Not Disturb' sign outside, the new signs introduced by Disney would mean that rooms are checked daily.

Disney told the paper that if anyone was to 'take issue' with the housekeeping staff entering daily, it will be happy to talk to people on an individual basis to discuss concerns or problems.
