On Saturday morning there was a crash on the I-96 on Davidson in Detroit, USA that left nine injured and three in critical condition.

The crash began when a jeep containing the six teenager over-turned on the road. It's unclear what made the driver lose control on the Interstate, but none of the teens inside suffered any life-threatening injuries.

Dr Cynthia Ray, who left her vehicle to give medical assistance at the scene and was hit by oncoming traffic, has passed away from her injuries.

Sean English, a junior at University of Detroit Jesuit and his parents also left their cars to help the passengers of the overturned jeep.

English, a student athlete and cross country running star, had been on their way to church with his parents. He has had his foot amputated following the accident.

Speaking about English, Chris Charbeneau, the University of Detroit Jesuit's music director, said: "He's just an all-around great young man.

"All I know is that his parents said this will be a very long road. There will be several surgeries coming up, I know, because his lower body was really, really hurt. I can't imagine how Sean will feel once he's aware what's going on. I was impressed with his parents, with how grateful they were that their son is still here."

Dr Ray, who specialised in lung diseases and treatment at Henry Ford Hospital, suffered a severe head injury and underwent neurosurgery at Sinai-Grace Hospital, but the doctors were unable to save her life.

Henry Ford Hospital, where she worked, released the following statement: "We were so saddened to hear the news about Dr Cynthia Ray.

"Ray has been with the Henry Ford family since 2005 and is widely known as a stellar physician and kind, compassionate colleague. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr Ray's family and the entire Henry Ford pulmonary team."

According to The Daily Mail, close friend and mentor Dr Mike Eichenhorn described the 47-year-old doctor as 'a giving, generous spirit'.

He said: "It would have been impossible for Cyndi to pass by the car that overturned because that's the kind of person she was. She was always there to help others."

Dr Ray and English were hit by a 17-year-old driver whose car spun out of control. He was on his way to work that morning and remains in critical condition.

His family have released the following statement: "Our family is asking for prayers for all the victims and their families who were involved in the horrific accident. We would also like to thank those involved in the accident who went above and beyond their duties to save lives. The family would like to clarify and provide an update on our family member's condition.

"The 17-year-old son was on his way to work Sunday morning. He was not intoxicated which was proven by the toxicology reports which was given to us by the hospital.

"He is currently in critical condition and suffers with two brain bleeds and swelling of the brain along with a fracture in his vertebrae. As you can imagine, this is devastating to all the victims and their families. Please keep them in your prayers and thoughts as we continue through this process."
