A doctor on TikTok has shared a video revealing some of the more unusual things that happen in the operating room - including that surgeons often 'shave your pubes'.

Dr Karan Rajan (@dr.karanr) is an NHS doctor who has 2.9 million followers on TikTok, where he's become the font of all knowledge for weird and wonderful facts he's learned from working in medicine.

In a video shared back in December, Dr Karan revealed some of the secrets from the operating theatre, as part of a TikTok series called 'Things that happen in the operating room that your surgeon doesn't tell you'.

In the clip - which is part two of the series - Dr Karan explains how doctors often have to shave your pubic hair while you're knocked out, advising that you can avoid any embarrassment if you do it yourself the night before.

He says: "We shave your pubes while you sleep - and your body hair in any place where we're going to operate. So, if you don't want me trimming your hedge, do it yourself the night before surgery."

Sharing more insights, Dr Karan continues: "We have you in all sorts of weird positions on the operating table, so we can get better access to some body parts.

"We listen to all sorts of music when we operate - drum n bass, hip hop... But don't worry, no one listens to 'Another One Bites The Dust'."

In parts one, three and four, Dr Karan also reveals various other interesting facts about surgery and surgeons.

It turns out doctors talk about all sorts of things while they're operating, including 'good stuff to watch on Netflix' and 'hospital gossip'.

Dr Karan also admitted someone 'usually' drops something on the floor, adding: "Don't worry, we don't use the five second rule - you get a brand new instrument."

In another video, he explains that surgeons sometimes 'put seaweed in your wounds', but it's something called alginate, a linear polysaccharide extracted from brown marine algae.

He adds: "Sometimes, in the middle of your operation, we'll have a drink or a bite to eat.

"We also scrub you clean before surgery - not because we think you're filthy, but to reduce the risk of infection.

"We will also wipe you down after surgery so you're squeaky clean."
