Not all heroes wear capes and all that, as one doctor has proved as he saved a dog from getting strangled by a lift.

Dr Mohammad Awad saw a woman trying to stop a dog from choking after its lead had become caught in an elevator door and immediately jumped into action.

The horrific incident happened on Sunday when the owner of the brown dog stepped out of the lift, but the door appeared to have shut on its lead.

CCTV footage from the lobby of the Olympus Harbour Island Apartments in Florida shows the lead getting caught, with the dog quickly being dragged upwards towards the ceiling as the lift moved.

The woman, who appears to be its owner, tries to pull the lead out, but to no avail - thankfully Dr Awad is in the right place at the right time and he jumps to assistance.

He quickly runs over, dressed in his blue scrubs, and manages to free the dog from its lead, ultimately saving it from what would have been a pretty awful fate.

Both the dog and the doctor fall to the ground, with the lucky animal running off but appearing to be unharmed.

Speaking to CNN, Dr Awad said: "My neighbour just got off the elevator with her dog and right when she got off, I could see the leash was still inside the elevator door.

"It was all slow motion, but it all happened so fast. Before I knew it the dog got launched into the air and I jumped into action."

"I tried to break open the leash on my initial attempt and it didn't work. I tried to break it with my strength and I just couldn't do it.

"I re-watched the video and I didn't feel like it was me in the video, but it happened so naturally."

Dr Awad also told ABC Action News that he had just returned home to his apartment after working a seven-day shift at the nearby Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Despite his inevitable fatigue, his instincts kicked in.

Speaking to the news outlet, he added: "The dog just got launched in the air and I just sprung into action. I'm just happy that I was there.

"Harbour Island is a place of dog lovers, everybody has a dog so I'm sure I'll run into that dog soon."

The video was shared on Facebook by the doctor's brother, who simply captioned it: "My brother saved a dog's life."

What an absolute legend.
