An earthquake hit the UK this morning (8 September), leaving some houses 'shaking'.

According to reports, the 3.9 magnitude tremor was felt in parts of Bedfordshire and London.

The quake was also felt in Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes, as well as in High Wycombe.

Last Quake, an independent scientific organisation, estimated that the shudder was potentially felt by around 660,000 people.

Speaking to local news site MKFM, a resident from Leighton Buzzard said: "I got woken up this morning to my bed and wardrobe shaking.

"Looked out the window to see the neighbours were out the front checking their roofs to make sure they were all ok. I originally thought someone had fallen out of bed in another room and it had made the house shake."

While another added: "I'm in Middleton and the whole house shook."

Residents also took to social media to share their utter disbelief at the quake.

One person said: "The earth has just moved in Leighton Buzzard...in my 56 years this is the 1st time have felt an earthquake."

Another claimed their parent had just experienced a nasty surprise, writing: "My mum felt the earthquake in her flat in Leighton Buzzard. This being 2020 I've told to look out for the tsunami that's bound to be on its way."

Some people, however, didn't realise what it was until it was too late.

One embarrassed homeowner confessed: "When you get out the shower because your house is shaking and you think someone is absolutely hammering on your front door!! Ran round the house dripping wet shouting 'hello' like an absolute moron!"

But with it being a relatively small earthquake, others made light of the news.

Taking to Twitter, one person shared a photo of some bins that had toppled over, with the caption: "UK 2020 #earthquake We will rebuild."

While another joked: "There's been a 3.6 magnitude #earthquake this morning in Leighton Buzzard. Locals are calling for a 1 minute applause for the binmen this Friday at 8am."

This comes after a quake hit Sussex last month, striking 50km east of Eastbourne on 13 August.
