Bilal Bashir absconded from HMP Hewell and went on a two-week crime spree before being caught and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

He had been serving a four-year sentence for a burglary charge when he escaped from an exercise yard near Redditch.

Bashir stole an Audi A5 and then joined up with a masked gang to steal a £155,000 Ferrari California three days later.

The escapee and the gang then took the car for a joyride in Birmingham town centre and were caught on CCTV camera driving on the wrong side of the road as they tried to escape the police.

The car was then dumped and left with £40,000 worth of damage.

Police found the Audi on the M6, and Bashir repeatedly rammed a marked police car in order to escape.

Officers managed to successfully block Bashir off when he tried to drive the wrong way down the dual carriageway, but he abandoned his car and fled the scene.

The police later traced him to a friend's flat where he was arrested.

His mobile phone contained evidence of him being involved in both carjacking incidents and a second mobile phone had pictures of Bashir flaunting stolen goods.

He has been sentenced to 10 years for burglary, theft and dangerous driving after a five-day trial at Birmingham Crown Court.

Detective Constable Darren Brown, of Force CID, said: "Several witnesses came forward and we had detailed descriptions as well as discarded clothing and CCTV.

"The Ferrari was recovered but the damage caused was estimated to be £40,000."
