An ex-marine has posted a video on TikTok about how to stop intruders breaking into your hotel room, having shared three techniques that may help.

Robin (@dutchintheusa), recently posted the video on his feed, writing: "Hotel room safety you should know #safety #psa #alone #travel #safetytips #lifehack #survival."

In the footage, he shows viewers three different tactics to make it harder to break into a hotel room - using simple items including a belt and a water glass.

Demonstrating the first method, the former Royal Marine - who is from the Netherlands - said: "Here's some hotel room safety tips you should know about.

"Use the belt to go through the chain link of your hotel. This makes it harder to pick it or even remove the lock from the chain link."

He grabs a belt, loops it around the doorknob, before stretching it upwards to feed it through the chain link on the door.

He then pulls the rest of the belt back down to secure it on the doorknob, in turn, making the door more secure.

A second idea is even simpler, as it simply involves popping an empty glass on the door handle.

"Use a glass to wake you up if someone tries to open the door," Robin explains.

Finally, he goes to find a long rod or stick to place behind the door - heading into the bathroom to retrieve the shower rail.

Robin continues: "And my favourite of all, a self-made barrier - in this case I'm using a shower curtain rod to barricade the door.

"Using a triangular method to put pressure on the door, you won't be able to open it."

Some TikTok users thought Robin was taking things a bit far, with one commenting: "Relax Jason Bourne."

But many others were quick to point out that some people may really benefit from his advice - especially those who might be escaping domestic violence.

One commented: "A lot of men asking 'why would you need to do this??' or 'it's not that serious' truly don't know what it's like to live as a woman today."

Another said: "I'm a female and travel for business. This is good. I'm often scared most in parking lots."

A third wrote: "All the cis men in the comments. It's really just going right over their heads."

A fourth added: "I love how it's 99 percent guys in the comments saying this is extra or not needed. It is needed."
