A police vehicle has exploded outside a medical centre in south east Turkey and is reported to have left five dead, with at least 70 wounded.

The explosion happened near the Kiziltepe State Hospital in the Mardin Kiziltepe region of the country, close to the Syria border.

Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene.

A Turkish official said the bombing had been coordinated with another attack and is reported to be the work of the PKK (the Kurdistan Workers' Party), in the southeastern province of Mardin.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the explosion was caused by a car bomb directed at security forces stationed near the hospital.

Turkish security officials believe the device hit a police vehicle, wounding at least 10 police officers.

Images have emerged on Twitter to show smoke rising from buildings in the distance and others show streets covered in debris.

There are also reports that there has been a car bomb explosion targeting police in a historic part of the city of Diyarbakir and this has wounded several people, the official said.
