Eyewitnesses have described the horror of the terror attack on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice tonight, reportedly killing around 60 people.

A lorry driver ploughed into crowds of people on the busy road as they innocently celebrated Bastille Day, one of the biggest celebrations in the French calendar.

In addition to the 73 reported dead, it is thought more than 150 have been injured in the attack, with that number expected to rise.

One eyewitness told BFM TV: "Everyone was calling run, run, run there's an attack run, run, run. We heard some shots. We thought they were fireworks because it's 14th July.

"There was great panic. We were running too because we didn't want to stick around and we went into a hotel to get to safety."

Reports suggest there were thousands of people on the promenade watching the fireworks when the attack began.

One British holidaymaker, 59-year-old Esther Serwah, said she was on the way to the promenade when she heard the screams of the victims.

"People were screaming in French but I didn't understand," she said in the MailOnline.

"Some people were lying in the streets dead and people were running over the bodies. Everybody was saying it's a terror attack. It's just horrible."

According to one eyewitness speaking to Sky News, the lorry driver crashed into the crowd before getting out of the vehicle shooting.

Wassim Bouhlel said: "There was carnage on the road. Bodies everywhere."

Another eyewitness said: "We almost died. It was hallucinating... the lorry zigzagged, you had no idea where it was going. My wife, a metre away, she was dead."

For now, all we can do is tell anyone in the area to get themselves safe and wait for emergency services to deal with the tragedy.

Our thoughts are with all those devastated by the attack.
