Visitors to a fairground rushed in to help out when a 'Magic Carpet' ride began to malfunction - you can see shocking footage of the incident here:

Videos taken at the National Cherry Festival in Michigan in the US, show the ride appearing to come loose while riders were still on it.

As the Magic Carpet ride swings in a pendulum motion, the base of the ride starts to look very unstable before the whole thing starts to rock backwards and forwards.

In the clip, people can be heard screaming as they realise what's happening.

Quick-thinking visitors to the park rushed over to use their weight to help stabilise the ride and have been credited with stopping the whole thing from collapsing.

The festival's executive director, Kat Paye said: "Inspections of the rides happen daily and written reports are filled out and completed on each ride every morning prior to operation.

"I am grateful for the quick response of staff and community members and very thankful that there were no injuries."

Joey Evans from Arnold Amusements, the company that created the ride, said it had come off its blocking.

He told UpNorthLive: "Just goes to show you what type of people live here in Traverse City, that they without even a second thought will go right over and do whatever they need to, you know for one of their own, and we think it's remarkable that they were willing to help you know keeping themselves safe on the outside, but doing whatever they could do, to slow the right to stop the ride.

"Unfortunately that ride the way that is designed, it doesn't stop on a dime, you can't just hit a break in it instantly stop, it has to come down, you know, and unfortunately, swing back and forth you know until it comes to situations like this."

He added: "Obviously there was a malfunction. We don't know as of yet what it was.

"The ride has been dismantled it is gone and it is on its way back to the factory, the company that makes it is in Ohio, and it's on its way down there for them to figure out what, what happened was it is, was it a malfunction was a computer glitch, we don't know. We're just not sure what it was."
