A man who shot and killed his daughter's sexual abuser has been sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Jay Maynor, 43, shot 59-year-old Raymond Earl Brooks in June 2014 after having the horror of discovering that he had molested his daughter, Julia, since she was four.

Brooks was Julia's adopted maternal granddad. He served 27 months of a five-year sentence for the sexual abuse of Julia, which took place between the ages of four and nine.

Ten years later Maynor would track him down and get his revenge for the attacks. At trial earlier this month, Maynor pleaded guilty to the killing so his daughter wouldn't have to give evidence and was handed a 40-year term.

Julia, who waived her right to anonymity after her dad was sentenced, told AL.com: "My father was protecting me, like a father should do. He is an amazing father - actually the best. He loves us so much."

She also slammed the long sentence her dad received, comparing it to the five years Brooks was given. She said: "Brooks took my innocence away and only served like 18 months, and now I suffer daily from what Raymond did to me,"

On the day of the shooting Maynor also fired his gun into a shop at a man who had been dating his stepdaughter and had, allegedly, abused her. The man was unharmed. Maynor received 20 years for attempted murder in that shooting, which will be served concurrently.
