A figure believed to be California's unidentified 'jetpack man' has been caught on camera flying high in the skies of Los Angeles.

A video captured by local aviation school Sling Pilot Academy shows the figure whizzing around in the clouds near Palos Verdes, which is south of Los Angeles, on 21 December.

The school told LADbible the footage was captured by one of its flight instructors, Brandy Fogelman.

The clip was shared on the school's Instagram page, with the caption saying: "Video taken by Sling Pilot Academy Flight Instructor while flying at approx. 3,000' near Palos Verdes south of Los Angeles. Catalina Island is in the background.

"The video appears to show a jet pack, but it could also be a drone or some other object.

"If it is a 'guy in a jet pack' then it remains to be seen whether it is a legal test flight (jet packs are real - there is a manufacturer near Los Angeles) or related to the jet pack sightings near LAX recently that caused disruptions to air traffic."

Sightings of a 'guy in a jetpack' were first reported back in September, when an American Airlines pilot radioed through to the control tower to say he'd seen someone in the sky as he approached LAX at about 3,000ft, around 10 miles out for a landing.

The pilot estimated that the bloke was only about 300 yards out of his window, with Fox News reporting that a second pilot also saw the mysterious figure.

In an audio recording of the conversation, you can hear 'Pilot AA1997' saying: "Tower, American 1997, we just passed a guy in a jetpack."

A message from the control tower replies: "American 1997, OK, thank you. Were they off to your left or right side?"

The pilot says: "Off the left side, maybe 300 yards or so, about our altitude."

In the recording, his co-pilot could also be heard adding: "Only in LA."

Another sighting occurred in October, this time reported by a China Airlines crew, who said they encountered the jetpack man flying at 6,500ft, about seven miles to the north of LAX.

The FBI remain stumped, with a statement that month saying: "The FBI is in contact with the FAA and is investigating multiple reports of what, according to witnesses, appeared to be an individual in a jetpack near LAX, including one today reported by a China Airlines crew.

"Anyone with information should contact the FBI at 310 477-6565."
