So, Germany have become the biggest casualty of the World Cup in Russia this summer. They were beaten 2 - 0 by South Korea and finished bottom of the group.

This is pretty unheard of for the World Champions, the last time they were knocked out in the group stages was 80 years and 18 World Cup tournaments ago.

Naturally this is music to the ears of most of the other teams in the tournament who harbour ambitions of winning the thing. Brazil could have been a potential second round opponent, they'll be happy, as will any team that now won't have to face them.

Particularly happy though will be England fans. As well as proving that football is DEFINITELY coming home, once and for all, it also means that to win the whole thing, they won't even have to beat Germany.

One person who is not glad to see the back of them is BBC's Match of the Day head honcho, Gary Lineker.

Lineker was part of the 1990 team that was knocked out in a World Cup semi-final on penalties by the (then) West Germany team that went on to win the whole thing.

In fact, Lineker coined the famous phrase: "Twenty-two men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans always win," to describe football.

Now, Gary would always have me remind you that he scored his penalty that night in Italy, but he is clearly still a bit bitter about losing that game.

Signing off from the show after Germany's loss, Lineker had a mischievous grin on his face as he said: "Mein Gott! Auf weidersehen," to the Deutsch side.

For good measure, he chucked in a snide little wave.

Afterwards, he also tweeted: "VAR sends Germany home. Mein Gott!"

People on Twitter have been raving about his cheeky send off to England's bitter rivals.

One said: "You've got to love Gary Lineker"

Another said: "And this why Gary Lineker is the greatest football pundit of all time"

In the midst of all of this laughter and fun at the German team's misfortune, it is worth remembering the significance of today.

Today is eight years to the day since Frank Lampard's goal against Germany was disallowed. That goal would have made the score 2 - 2 that day. As it ended up, Germany ran out 4 - 2 winners.

Funny how these things even themselves out.
