The former girlfriend of an assassinated alleged cartel leader in Mexico has been shot dead after being tricked into selling shoes to a fake client.

Paulina Arreola Perez, 26, was shot by armed men on motorbikes in the borough of Benito Juarez, Mexico City, on the night of 9 June.

A male friend identified as Eduardo Arturo Trejo was also killed in the attack.

Perez was shot at least nine times and Eduardo twice while inside her car.

Paramedics arrived on the scene and took the pair to hospital, where they later died from their injuries.

According to Diario Contra Republica, witnesses say she was attacked while driving in her car through the Álamos neighborhood.

The outlet reports that two armed men on motorcycles shot at her vehicle.

Paulina was the former girlfriend of alleged drug lord Alexis 'El Alexis' Martinez, and lived a life of luxury - travelling around the world and wearing designer clothing.

However, since he was killed, she had to start selling shoes online, and was allegedly lured into the trap of an unnamed suspect posing as a prospective buyer.

It is believed she was targeted because of her links to the criminal gang known as La Union Tepito, which is involved in the sale of narcotics, kidnapping, extortion and murder in and around the Mexican capital.

Her boyfriend was believed to be one of the cartel's leaders, and had been murdered by a hitman disguised as a food delivery worker in the city of Zapopan in March.

Through him, Paulina was able to lead an extravagant lifestyle that was flaunted on social media, including shots of her on holiday in the likes of Dubai, Athens and Toronto - much of which had been paid for using cloned credit cards.

Following her boyfriend's death, Paulina took to social media to pay tribute to her partner, writing: "Someday we will meet again."

Newsflash

She has become the third girlfriend of a member of La Union Tepito to be killed, following the murders or Valeria Diaz in May last year and Nayibi Mustafa in March.

Together, the trio had been known as 'Las Novias de La Union', which translates as 'The Union Girlfriends'.
