The government has released the list of places people will be permitted to travel to as coronavirus restrictions continue to be eased.

The destinations have been categorised as red, amber or green, according to different levels of quarantine and testing requirements based on how high-risk they are.

Gibraltar
Falkland Islands
South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands

From Wednesday 12 May, the government will add the following countries to the red list:

The Maldives
Nepal
Turkey

Every three weeks, the government will review the countries.

Speaking today, the Secretary of State for Transport Grant Shapps said: "We in this country have managed to construct a fortress against Covid. But the disease is still prevalent in other parts of the world, most notably at the moment in India.

"In fact, more new cases of Covid have been diagnosed around the world in the last seven days than at any time since the pandemic began."

He added: "That's why today's announcement, removing the stay in the UK restrictions from May 17, is necessarily cautious.

"We must make absolutely sure that the countries we reconnect with are safe, that their infection rates are low and their vaccination rates are high.

"It means making sure we are not incubating the most dangerous variants that they're not and that they have safe and secure surveillance in place."

Grant Shapps.

If you're travelling to one of the countries on the green list, you will not need to self-isolate on your return, but will only need to take tests before and after your trip.

People returning to England from a country listed as amber must quarantine at home for ten days but can take a 'test to release' on day five. They will also need to take to take tests before and after their trips.

Those returning from a red list country must stay in a government-managed quarantine hotel for 11 nights, at a cost of £1,750.

To travel to either a green, amber, or red country you will need a passenger locator form as well as a negative test result prior to departure.

Countries have been assessed on a range of factors in order to categorise them. They include the proportion of a country's population that has been vaccinated, plus rates of infection, emerging new variants, and the country's access to reliable scientific data and genomic sequencing.

It is believed that some places on the amber list could switch to green when the situation is reviewed later on in the year.
