Green And Black Toxic Snow Sparks Waste Management Protests In Russia

It's fair to say Russia has a pollution problem.

Crowds have gathered to protest in Russia after toxic green and black snow has fallen in certain areas.

People in the town of Pervouralsk have been left horrified by the disgusting and bizarre snow, thought to have been caused by chemicals coming from a chrome factory. The snow atop several mountains near Kemerovo also recently turned black as a result of pollution from nearby coal plants.

On top of that, residents of the town of Sibai have been reduced to wearing facemasks to protect themselves from the fumes of a copper factory. This has been going on since November. Locals have been given activated charcoal by the authorities, who have even installed fans in the town to try to combat the fumes.

Even though the factory has been closed for some time, people in the area are still getting ill.

Support for Vladimir Putin in Siberia is thought to be on the wane because of the environmental effects of his government. There have also been protests about plans to send rubbish from Moscow out to poorer areas, ordinarily in the north of Russia and Siberia.

Protests about this particular issue started in Moscow last year after a number of children ended up in hospital as a result of poisoning. It was thought that the children were affected by a nearby landfill.

Moscow has been suffering through a crisis with regards to it's trash problem since a gigantic tip was closed down by Putin's government.

That has seen Moscow rubbish - the garbage of 13 million people - ferried out of the city to other areas. People have complained that toxic fumes from all of this trash is causing health complaints such as headaches and nosebleeds.

Putin's environmental policies have been subject to quite a bit of criticism recently from environmentalists. They've claimed that his policies are 'immoral' and called for money to be invested in waste separation and recycling programmes.

In a recent speech, Mr Putin spoke of "shady firms...dumping rubbish wherever and however they can."

Despite these words, and his actions to sort out the problem, trust in his presidency hit a new low last week at 33%.

Russia has been enduring problems such as the green and black snow for some time now. Back in 2016, a lake turned purple in the city of Stavropol. It is thought that leaking chemicals from a nearby factory got into the water and caused the colour change.
