Greggs has been smashing it over the last year, thanks in no small way to the fact that it's become the main brand we think of when we think of vegan fast food alternatives.

So much so, that it's decided to share out a huge £7 million ($9m) of its profits among its staff, meaning that anyone who works at the chain is in for a nice little post-Christmas bonus.

The bakery chain, which has more then 2,000 branches across the country, has said it will give the one-off payment to staff to recognise all of their 'crucial contribution to the company's success' after the 13 percent jump in sales.

The bakery chain has made vegan food more accessible to the public.

This means that about 19,000 employees who've been working there since before 31 March 2019 will get about £300 ($390) each, with the other 6,000 staff getting £75 ($98) for each quarter they have worked there.

Greggs has been all over the place, and thanks to their clever marketing, and of course, making vegan food more accessible for those who eat on-the-go, they seem to have really led the way lately.

The brand has released the vegan sausage roll, vegan steak bake and first vegan doughnut earlier this month - and with the help of the likes of Piers Morgan, they've inadvertently had all the publicity they needed to rake it in from their new plant-based offering.

Chief executive Roger Whiteside said: "We delivered a strong finish to what has been an exceptional year for Greggs. The major investments we have made in recent years to make Greggs an attractive choice in the food-on-the-go market are delivering.

"Consumers are responding very positively and we have seen increasing visits from both new and existing customers.

"Our record financial performance in 2019 has enabled us to enhance returns to shareholders.

"I am delighted to announce that we will also be making a special additional payment to all of our colleagues across the business who have worked so hard to deliver this success in what has been a phenomenal year.

"Looking to the year ahead, we face strong sales comparatives and cost inflation headwinds present a challenge.

"However, with strong momentum in the business we see further growth opportunities across a number of channels as we invest in new ways to make Greggs more accessible and convenient for customers."

Greggs plans to open a further 100 stores across the UK over the next 12 months.
