Gun shots have reportedly been fired near Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris. With police telling people to avoid the area.

People took to Twitter to say they had been told by officers to stay inside the cathedral, while officers got the situation under control.

Those inside were told to sit in the centre of the cathedral and wait for the situation to be over.

Crowds of tourists fled from the area surrounding the cathedral, as police rushed to the scene.

A police source has reportedly told Reuters a man attacked a police officer with a hammer, and has since been shot and injured by cops.

Those inside the cathedral were slowly released, after going through security checks.
