Ebony Newman knew there had been a shooting at the Superior Liquor & Grocery in San Bernardino on Friday. She was told, incorrectly, that one of those killed was an 11-year-old boy. The face of the boy was covered and she had no reason to assume it was her nine-year-old son was the dead boy.
Ebony said: "I pulled up to the scene, thinking it's another situation in San Bernardino, and it's my baby. What mom in her mind would think, that's my baby? This is not right. This is not right."
On Saturday night she returned to the scene of the death, and slammed her palms into the pavements, overcome with grief.
The motive for shooting is not yet known, but police Sargent Vicki Cervantes believes that Mahan, who was a known gang member, was the intended target.
A picture of the suspect has been released, with lieutenant Travis Walker posting it to Twitter with the message: "Here's a hashtag #BreakTheStreetCode! He doesn't deserve anonymity! Please contact The SBPD with information."
Truly heart-breaking stuff.
