ITV is making a new documentary about the manhunt for Raoul Moat.

Set to air this summer, Manhunt: The Raoul Moat Story will delve into one of the most shocking news stories to hit the UK in the past decade, exploring the police and public reaction to the infamous stand-off.

In July 2010, police led a nationwide manhunt for the 37-year-old, who had shot three people in two days using a sawn-off shotgun.

His victims included ex-girlfriend Samantha Stobbart, her new partner Chris Brown and police officer David Rathband.

As a result of his actions, Miss Stobbart was hospitalised, while Mr Brown tragically died and officer Rathband was blinded. Unable to cope with impact of the injuries he sustained, officer Rathband later killed himself.

After six days on the run, Moat was eventually spotted by police and cornered in an open space in Rothbury, Northumberland. However, despite negotiations and an attempted arrest, Moat shot and killed himself.

The new hour-long documentary will be presented by Nicky Campbell and will include exclusive interviews with family members, witnesses, and journalists who covered the case.

Speaking about the documentary, executive producer Mike Blair said it will provide new insights into what happened ten years ago.

He said: "This documentary is the latest in a line of programmes to come out of our base in Cardiff and thanks to the experience and skill of the team there, it will provide a revealing and sensitive insight into a manhunt which gripped the nation - but which had a tragic backstory."

ITV Controller of Current Affairs Tom Giles said the programme could not be more timely with the current levels of media scrutiny and stretched public services.

He explained: "With this landmark documentary, ITV aims to provide an important and vivid insight into these tragic events.

"At a time when media scrutiny has never been higher, and with public services like the police feeling the strain, this programme will delve into the investigation of the case and the actions of Moat in forensic detail, with the intention of immersing viewers in the manhunt, exploring how Moat escaped officers' clutches for a week."

A date has yet to be set, but ITV has confirmed that Manhunt: The Raoul Moat Story will air this summer.
