New Zealand's prime minister has been invited to virtually sit in on tomorrow's National Cabinet meeting.

Jacinda Ardern will share with Australian authorities their coronavirus strategy after keeping infections comparatively low thanks to a strict lockdown approach.

The National Cabinet has been meeting every week and features the premiers and chief ministers of Australia's states and territories.

In the early stages of the pandemic, they decided the various social distancing rules that were eventually put in place and now they are looking at how and when to scale them back.

New Zealand has been praised for its strategy over the past few weeks. A total of 1,487 people have been infected since the pandemic broke out, however there are now only 201 active cases.

It's hoped Ms Ardern will be able to share some tips on how they have regressed from Level Four lockdown to Level Three. New Zealand has, for the first time since March, recorded no new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours.

New Zealand's Director-General of Health, Dr Ashely Bloomfield, said it's helpful these two countries work together over the next few weeks.

He said: "If I reflect on how closely we have worked together over the last three months in trying to go in tandem - whether around the border, or case definitions, or sharing information - I'm confident we could continue that to support a trans-Tasman bubble arrangement if that's what the governments agree.

Australian prime minister Scott Morrison told reporters last week that the connection between the two countries is important and they enjoy an open dialogue about strategies and tips on how to handle coronavirus.

Mr Morrison added that while international travel seems a far away thought, however the first channels that will open up will be across the Tasman.

"If there's any country in the world with whom we can reconnect with first, undoubtedly that's New Zealand," Morrison said.

"We have similar trajectories. Their restrictions have been far greater. Our [coronavirus] case response has been the same, if not better, than New Zealand."
