A Japanese woman has shared photos of the horrific abuse she suffered at the hands of her grandfather a decade ago.

The woman, who is now in her 20s, is reported to have suffered at the hands of her abusive grandfather, who not only starved her, but would physically abuse her if he caught her eating.

According to the Daily Mail, she said in a tweet that she was 'forbidden to eat' by her grandparent and that he would 'kick me in the belly' or force her to spit the food if she was found to be sneaking food in secret.

She was so malnourished that she ended up weighing just 16.8 kilograms - or 37 lbs or 2.6 stone. She shared the photos - which show just how skeletal she was - on Twitter in order to raise awareness of abuse, urging anyone else suffering from similar circumstances, or who has an eating disorder, to 'ask for help before it's too late'.

When she was finally rescued, experts told her she had been just 'ten minutes away from death'.

Thankfully, a decade on, the woman has fully recovered and newer pictures show her health and weight to be drastically improved.

While it hasn't been revealed if her grandfather was prosecuted for what he forced her to endure - nor how any other family members responded during this ordeal - it's great to see that she has managed to recover from such a horrendous situation.

Of course, there are always people who have to try to undermine others, and there were some on social media who claimed that the photos she had posted of her looking emaciated beyond belief were fake.

Her response - not that she should have had to respond to that - was to post more pictures, apparently taken in a hospital, of large bruises on her chest and neck that were caused after being beaten by her grandfather.

You can see just how far she's come in the last decade. And while the memories of her abusive situation will undoubtedly never leave her, she's an inspiration to everyone for demonstrating that it's possible to overcome even the most vile cruelty.
