Jeremy Clarkson has been slammed after saying Greta Thunberg deserves a 'smacked bottom'.

The 61-year-old was sharing his thoughts, in a column for The Sunday Times, and described the climate activist as having 'no knowledge of how the world works'.

The Grand Tour host referred to Thunberg as a 'bucket of ego' following her appearance at COP26 summit in Glasgow.

Writing about the 18-year-old, Clarkson said: "I simply don't get the Thunberg phenomenon.

"She has no knowledge of how the world works, no manners and no letters after her name because instead of going to school, she's been busy sailing round the world so she can be mardy and abusive to grown-ups.

"What she needs is a smacked bottom."

Clarkson has received heavy backlash on social media for the comments.

One user wrote: "61-year-old Jeremy Clarkson calling for 18-year-old Greta Thunberg to have her bottom smacked deserves a far more WTAF???? response than it got.

"Middle aged white men using column inches to have pops at a young girl who is concerned about the environment is just f***ing weird."

Another said: "There's a creepy shivery dirty old man weirdness to Jeremy Clarkson's attempt at humour this week in his rage at Greta Thunberg!"

A third added: "Today Jeremy Clarkson said Greta Thunberg 'needs a smacked bottom'.

"Real normal s***."

A fourth concluded: "What is it about Greta Thunberg that makes all old guys get angry and defensive?

"Brilliant to see so many young people in Glasgow caring about this planet."

In his column, Clarkson went on to argue COP26 was a waste of time, saying he already knew what he needed to do to reduce his carbon footprint.

He wrote: "Here's a tip, Greta: lecturing me on what needs to be done is pointless.

"It'd be like standing in my bedroom every morning ordering me to wear clothes. I know already."

Thunberg is also of the opinion COP26 is unlikely to lead to real change.

At one point during the summit, Greta was seen at Festival Park in Govan chanting: "You can shove your climate crisis up your a**e, you can shove your climate crisis up your a**e!

"Change is not going to come from inside there - that is not leadership, this is leadership. We say no more blah blah blah, no more exploitation of people and nature and the planet.

"No more exploitation. No more blah blah blah. No more whatever the f*** they are doing inside there."
