A jihadi - believed to the 'Voice of Isis' on videos of executions - has been captured by Kurdish armed forces.

It is thought the fighter, who claims his name is Mohammad Abdullah Mohammed, could be the 'Voice of ISIS' heard narrating horrific execution videos and footage in which the terrorist organisation claims responsibility for the Paris attacks of 2015.

The jihadi, from Canada, is believed to be the masked militant who appeared in an execution video known as 'the Flames of War' in which six men are forced to dig their own graves before being murdered.

Contrary to his claims, a professor who researches extremism believes the man - who speaks with a Canadian accent - is called Abu Ridwan.

He was the subject of an FBI appeal for information back in 2014 as the US organisation tried to identify him. Professor Amarnath Amarasingam was told that Ridwan was the masked man in the video during a research visit to Syria.

Amarasingam remains convinced that Ridwan is the so-called 'Voice of ISIS'.

He explained: "As soon as I heard the radio broadcasts and Flames of War, I thought he sounded distinctly Canadian.

"I kept nursing this theory with each subsequent ISIS media release but could never find proof.

"It was only after I went to Syria in October that I got confirmation from another imprisoned fighter that the narrator was indeed Canadian.

"After the arrest, I tweeted a photo from a video that the Kurdish media had released. A childhood friend of his, who knew him until the moment he left for Syria, sent me a message saying that he knew who the captured fighter was.

"I asked him what his name was, and he said they used to call him Abu Ridwan when he lived in Toronto. It was the same name we learned in Syria."

In an interview, the captured fighter describes how many ISIS fighters have decided to leave Syria for Turkey because of cramped conditions, as well as an increase in drone and aerial strikes on the areas that ISIS still controls within the country.

In the same video, he also claims that he spent some years in Raqqa, the terror organisation's capital, but was eventually captured by the Kurdish forces on Sunday after 'attacking one of their points and entering into a gun battle with them'.

He also claims that he is originally Ethiopian but travelled to join up with ISIS from Canada in 2013, entering Syria through Turkey.

It is not known what will happen to him now.
