Jim Carrey Cleared Of Any Wrongdoing In His Ex-Girlfriend Cathriona White's Suicide
Jim Carrey has been cleared of any wrongdoing after it had been claimed that he played a part in the suicide of his ex-girlfriend Cathriona White.
The Irish make-up artist's family had alleged that Carrey provided her with drugs and gave her three sexually transmitted infections, but Carrey's lawyers proved that the actor was being blackmailed with fake STI results.
The wrongful death case was brought in 2016 by White's mother Brigid Sweetman and her estranged husband Mark Burton.
White died after she overdosed on prescription pills in 2015.
The case was dismissed after Carrey's lawyer Raymond Boucher proved that a document that claimed to show that White had a clean sexual bill of health in 2011 - before she met Carrey - was a fake.
The 55 year old Hollywood star counter-sued and claimed that White was trying to blackmail him during her life. He released a statement at the time that said: "Unfortunately, I made the mistake three years ago of giving in and settling false claims made against me by Mr. Marchino [Miss White's lawyer], on behalf of Cat, as mounting a public defence is a very costly and painful process. At the time I felt Cat was being exploited by Marchino.
"Since this new case was filed, I have discovered the depth of deception behind those false claims, the kind of deception decent people fall for, because to us, such behaviour is unimaginable.
"I will not give in a second time to these same fraudulent charges initiated by Cat's husband in name but not substance Mark Burton, and her estranged mother.
"Nor am I responsible for what these desperate characters have inadvertently unearthed about the woman I adored. I was clearly blinded by my affection.
"Regardless, I will hold a place of empathy, and forgiveness for Cat and continue to focus on the many blessings in this life"
Carrey also claimed that the Tipperary born make-up artist had tried to blackmail him for millions of dollars by telling the world that she contracted STIs from him.
White had a history of depression prior to her suicide and before she took her life wrote on Twitter: "Signing off Twitter, I hope I have been a light to my nearest and dearest. Peace and love to you all."
A spokesperson for the actor told The Hollywood Reporter: "Jim is looking forward to moving on with his life now."
