Kanye West Will Pay College Tuition For George Floyd’s Six-Year-Old Daughter Gianna

The generous donation also includes funding for Black-owned businesses that are in crisis in Chicago and other cities

Superstar rapper Kanye West has will pay the college tuition for George Floyd's daughter Gianna.

The rapper has also made a $2 million (£1.6m) donation in order to support the families of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor.

A representative for West told news channel CNN that the generous donation doesn't just include funding for legal fees for Arbery and Taylor's families, but also for Black-owned businesses in his hometown of Chicago (and other cities) that are in crisis.

West's representative said that West has established a 529 education plan - a tax-advantaged investment vehicle in the States designed to encourage saving for future higher education expenses - that will fully cover tuition expenses for Gianna Floyd, the six-year-old daughter of George Floyd.

George Floyd died while in police custody in Minneapolis on 25 May. His death has sparked outrage the world over, with protests taking place across the United States and beyond.

Police officer Derek Chauvin applied pressure with his leg to Floyd's neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds. He was later charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in connection with Floyd's death, although it has now been confirmed that the charges will be elevated to second-degree murder.

During that time, Floyd could be heard to tell Chauvin and officers Tou Thao, J.A. Kueng, and Thomas Lane that he couldn't breathe.

Three other police officers will now also face charges, it has been confirmed.

Prior to Floyd's death, Arbery was shot in February while jogging just outside of Brunswick, Georgia in an unprovoked racist attack by three white men. After a public outcry at a video of the killing was released, all three were arrested and charged.

Breonna Taylor died after being shot at least eight times by plain-clothes officers at her home in Louisville, Kentucky on 13 March, when they burst in to execute a 'no-knock' search warrant

Meanwhile, actor John Boyega gave gave an impassioned speech at a Black Lives Matter protest in London. yesterday (3 June), following Floyd's death.

He said: "Today is about innocent people who were halfway through their process - we don't know what George Floyd could have achieved, we don't know what Sandra Bland could have achieved, but today we're going to make sure that won't be an alien thought to our young ones.

"I need you to understand how painful this s*** is. I need you to understand how painful it is to be reminded every day that your race means nothing, and that isn't the case anymore - that was never the case."
