An investigation is underway after a shocking act of animal cruelty emerged from Western Australia last week.

7News.com.au reports a man at the Parkerville Tavern in Perth became enraged when a kookaburra stole a bit of food from his plate.

The alleged offender is accused of grabbing the bird and ripping its head clean off and throwing the body away - much to the shock and horror of people around him.

The bird was called Kevin by locals as the kookaburra would commonly come to the tavern to pick up scraps.

The tavern has released a statement expressing its utter shock at what took place at the weekend.

"We are still in disbelief about the barbaric attack on one of nature's gifts," the statement read.

"We are so sorry for those who witnessed this despicable act and whilst for many (especially the children) the memory of seeing such a thing will remain fresh for some time yet, please take comfort in knowing that the whole community is standing together against this type of behaviour.

"This is not the norm and will not be tolerated.

"The matter is being dealt with by the authorities, so we will know more about what the outcome will be soon. Thank you for everyone's support...such a beautiful community."

The RSCPA WA has begun an investigation into the matter and they hope to find out what provoked the alleged offender to do something so intense.

A spokesperson said: "We are concerned to hear about another senseless act of violence against an animal - in this case the friendly kookaburra, Kevin, at the Parkerville Tavern.

"It was reported to the RSPCA cruelty hotline last night (Friday) that a visitor to the tavern killed Kevin in front of other visitors, including families with children."

The pub was well aware that the kookaburra liked to nibble on people's food and explained that to people on its Facebook page.

"Meet one of our locals (he's still out there). He has a love for the Parky Steak Sandwich and fish. He is loathed to buy his own and whenever possible, will sneak up and steak yours," the pub notice said.

"Please be mindful of your precious steak sandwich and meals in the garden and in the meantime, we shall continue our negotiations with this chap in the hope that he learns some table manners."

The RSPCA will be looking to see if the offence contravenes the Animal Welfare Act 2002.
