An overwhelming majority of people who responded to a YouGov survey have said they want more products made in Australia.

Nearly 90 per cent of people reckon Australia needs to be less reliant on imported products from places like China.

A further 68 per cent of respondents said they would be actively looking for products that have the Australian Made logo attached to it.

Another question asked whether people supported infrastructure projects using Australian products even if it meant the project would be more expensive and 86 per cent of people agreed.

The questions have been posed in the wake of the coronavirus to see how Australians view the new world around them.

Australian Workers Union national secretary Daniel Walton said there needs to be an attitudinal shift in Australia post-pandemic.

"Now more than ever Australians want to be making our essential products here. We don't want to be reliant on China. And we want Aussie infrastructure to be built from Aussie steel, aluminium, glass, and cement," he said.

"Coronavirus should be the wake-up call our leaders need to stop being petty and just get behind Australian jobs," Mr Walton said. "Let's break the addiction to cheap Chinese-imported product. It's a stupid false economy."

Since Australia was plunged into self-isolation, there has been a massive uptick in people wanting to buy Aussie made products.

Australian Made Campaign chief executive Ben Lazzaro said there has been a 300 per cent increase in traffic to his website from people wanting to know as much information as possible about locally made products.

He says in addition to that, there has been a five-fold jump in the number of applications for products to be labelled Australian Made.

People should be on the lookout for different wordings when it comes to Aussie-branded things.

Australian Made means the product is substantially transformed in Australia but the cost of manufacturing in Australia isn't considered.

If something says it's a Product of Australia, it means that the product has all, or nearly all, of the manufacturing or processing carried out in Australia and that all of the products significant ingredients come from Australia.

Australian Grown means that each significant ingredient has been grown in Australia and all or virtually all of the production processes have occurred in Australia.

Ben Lazzaro told the Herald Sun: "We are not surprised that this situation has opened Australians' eyes to the imbalance between imported products and locally made products."
