A tradie has become an internet sensation after he helped subdue a man in Melbourne.

Sam Dale was minding his own business during a breakfast with his workmates when he noticed something was amiss in Melbourne suburb Collingwood.

The young bloke heard a woman's screams and leapt to help, realising that she had just allegedly been mugged outside an ATM.

Sam saw the suspect running off and bolted down the street.

He eventually caught up with the alleged thief, who was reportedly holding two knives, and tackled him to the ground.

Speaking with The Today Show, Sam added: "It was like something out of a movie. So I ran over to see if she was ok, and asked what the guy had done.

"She said he had a knife on him, and had said something to her about money and was really close to her. We tried to get cops down, but that wasn't going to be instant. Someone had to go and take him down I suppose, that's about it."

But his best line came from when he was chatting to a reporter on the scene.

He says that he jumped up to help the alleged victim after he had 'deleted a banh mi and a coffee'. That's not only a delicious sounding breakfast but also one hell of a line.

While he doesn't take well with the label of hero, he's certainly pretty chuffed with helping out someone in distress.

"He was walking around and there were people everywhere, he could have done that to someone else for all we know," Sam said. "It happened pretty fast. I was close to him, he was nearby, I didn't really think to be honest.

"It's been buttered up a lot to be honest.

"I feel like it's getting milked a bit at this point. It was a good thing to do but it's been blown up a fair bit, I'm keen to get back on with it."

Someone give this bloke Australian of the Year.
