A woman has spoken out about what it's like to juggle life as a lawyer, a mother and a part-time prostitute, having revealed she once even made $55,000 (£45,000) for three weeks' sex work.

Mum-of-one Katherine Sears has the full support of her husband John, who she met at Drake Law School a few years back.

John told KCCI he doesn't 'really care that much' that his wife works in the sex industry.

Typically, she will alternate between spending three weeks in Nevada - where prostitution is legal - followed by a week at home in Des Moines, Iowa.

The criminal defence lawyer has defended her unusual lifestyle, saying she finds sex work empowering, despite insisting she is also painfully shy.

Katherine told KCCI: "I like sex. Sex is fun, and I can get paid for it.

She added: "We degrade women who are open about sexuality.

"You're supposed to be this way and if you're not this way, you're bad. So, I think it's a lot of indoctrination."

Katherine has been working as a prostitute since she was 27.

Katherine started working as a prostitute three years ago, when she was 27.

While she isn't sure how much money she's made since then, she did admit the side job could be pretty lucrative.

She said: "I'd have to get my taxes out and look at it.

"The best I did, I made $55,000 in three weeks."

Prostitution is legal in Nevada, where she works regularly, but Katherine is keen to de-stigmatise it elsewhere in the United States.

She continued: "I think the more we talk about it, the better our chances are of getting the decriminalisation that we're pursuing.

"We're not going to have legislation change if we're passive about it."

The 30-year-old also hopes added: "Prostitutes are people. Prostitutes I've known are some of the best people I've known.

"I think a lot of people are upset about prostitution without understanding what it is they are being upset about."

After welcoming her first child four months ago, Katherine has been taking some time off from prostitution to care for her son, as well as channelling her energies into her new law practice.

She's also said she's willing to take on prostitution cases on pro bono as she continues to fight for decriminalisation of sex work.

She said: "Their bodies belong to them and we have absolutely no reason to be telling them that you cannot condition your consent this way."
