A loud explosion has been heard in the capital of Turkey, Ankara, as a military coup continues to unfold in the country.

CNN-Turk reports that the explosion occurred at the state-run television building in the capital.

There have also been reports of a stand-off at Istanbul's Taksim Square between pro and anti-coup military forces.

The apparent coup began on Friday evening, with prime minister Binali Yildirim announcing the events before the Turkish military seemingly claimed control in an email, although it has not been confirmed if this was with high command authority.

Turkey has since been plunged into chaos and the reports of an explosion at the state-run television building come after the Turkish military apparently used the channel to make an announcement.

The Turkish population are now seemingly taking sides and that is resulting in clashes between pro and anti-coup groups, with reports of shots being fired.

According to the Associated Press, Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency were also reporting that Ankara police headquarters had also been attacked by a helicopter belonging to the military.
