A man has been arrested after he was spotted licking his hand and wiping it on a handrail on a subway in Belgium.

The unidentified passenger, on a train in Brussels, is seen pulling down a protective face mask before putting his fingers in his mouth and rubbing them on a metal pole in front of him.

A fellow commuter posted the clip on Twitter and warned others to be careful when riding on the subway.

The caption read: "Watch what this son of a b**** does to the handrails on public transport. Don't touch the handrails."

According to the transport authorities, the man was removed from the carriage and taken in by police, while the train itself was taken off the line and cleaned thoroughly.

Responding to the video, which was doing the rounds on social media, the Brussels Intercommunal Transport Company tweeted: "The man (intoxicated) was arrested by the police and our security service. The subway train was withdrawn from service to be disinfected.

"Thank you for your message. Our metros are cleaned every day."

The video comes as fears over the spread of the deadly virus grow, with more than 119,000 having tested positive and over 4,300 having died since the outbreak began.

Earlier this week, the Italian government announced it was putting the entire country on lockdown, with 60 million residents told to stay at home.

Older people in the European country have been the hardest hit age group, with three quarters of the death toll being people aged between 70 and 89; a further 13 percent belong to people aged over 90 years old. The rest of the death toll are people in their 50s and 60s.

The country has the highest death toll from Covid-19 outside of China, with 631 people having passed away - 168 of whom died in a single day.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said the measures were being put in place to protect the most vulnerable members of society.

Mr Conte added: "Restrictions will include banning all public gatherings. There won't be just a red zone. We can't allow this anymore."

Yesterday, the UK's Health Minister Nadine Dorries tested positive for the coronavirus.

The Member of Parliament released a statement, which said: "Public Health England has started detailed contact tracing and the department and my parliamentary office are closely following their advice."

Six people have been confirmed to have died from Covid-19 in the UK, with the latest victim being a man in his 80s who had underlying health conditions.
